On the Service of the Church

The Services of the Church are not like the serivces of a business or the productions of a theater (the chancel - where the altar is - is NOT a stage!).  In fact, the plural "services" is not quite accurate.  There is only one service, and it is not ours but God's.

The Father gives us the Son (Christmas) and the Son, being revealed as the Son of God (Epiphany), atones for the sins of the world (Good Friday) and is raised from the dead (Easter), declaring all mankind forgiven, reconciled to God.  Then, receiving from the Father all authority (Ascension), the Son gives His Spirit (Pentecosst) to all mankind through His Church. This is God's service to us, repeated every Lord's Day at the Divine Service.

Therefore, the chief service of the Church, God's chief service to us, is the Mass of the Faithful.  The Mass tells and repeats the whole story - from Christmas to Pentecost - every Lord's Day and as often as it is celebrated.

Our Lord serves us through the holy sacraments (mysteries), which are Baptism, Preaching, Absolution, and the Lord's Supper (the number of sacraments is neither settled nor particularly important). Since God applies forgiveness, gives eternal life, and bestows all His salvific gifts through the sacraments, if you do not participate in them, then you don't get the gifts and mercies of God.

A Sacrament is when the sure and certain promise of God of eternal life in Christ is attached to an earthly element, such as water, voice, bread, and wine.
